飄洋過海來看你 was originally launched on 8th of August, 1991, sung by Jin Zhi-Juan(金智娟), a Taiwanese singer-songwriter, formerly known by the stage-name Wawa(娃娃). This song tried to convey the message that we are all a little silly, wanting to pursue true love in real life.

Wawa sings her own story, and resonates with many lovers who have the same trouble. She sings out the genuinest feelings in your heart. This song represents the Wawa’s own story, so it is so soul-stirring and touching! Probably, only stories and music that truly come from the bottom of the heart can move people so deeply!
This version, which was launched in 2020, somehow describes the phenomenon that the same-sex marriage had been legalized in Taiwan for one year since 2019, but this new law was only applicable to Taiwanese and the party who comes from countries that legalizes the same-sex marriage, such as the Netherlands, South Africa, Canada, and so on. On the contrary, this law was not applicable to the party who comes from countries that have still not legalized the same-sex marriage such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Phillipines, and so on. One of actors in the music video represents Japanese who is struggling with this situation and can not get married with his Taiwanese boyfriend, and receives the numerous interrogation in the airport immigration office about the reason why he enters Taiwan and departs frequently.
The Music Video is adapted from real stories. Before filming, the director actually interviewed a number of same-sex couples who were unable to get married, and condensed their anxiety of not being able to meet and worrying about separation every time they are waiting at the airport.
PS: Since 19th of January, 2023, the same-sex marriage has been enacted for all nationalities to register legally in Taiwan.

Lastly, there is another cover for this song, and the singer is 劉明湘(Rose Liu). She reinterpreted this song in the singing competition, Season 3 of Sing! China(中國好聲音), in 2014. This video has 3 million views, and I heard this version first and then watched the other two mentioned above. Thanks to 劉明湘, this song became the top search keyword for some periods of time after she performed this old song released in 1991 in the competition in 2014.
