Plot of the Movie, Reign of Assassins(劍雨)
劍雨浮生 is the cover song of the movie, Reign of Assassins(劍雨)
It was released in 2010, and it is wuxia movie directed by Su Chao-pin(蘇照彬) and co-directed by John Woo(吳宇森). The movie’s background was shot in China and the time was set in the Ming Dynasty. The cast of actors, actresses, and singers in this movie is quite diverse. The leading actor is 鄭雨盛(정우성), coming from Korea, and the leading actress, Michelle Yeoh(楊紫瓊) coming from Malaysia. Other supporting actors come from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan.
The leading actress plays an assassin,曾靜, who tries to return to a normal life after being spiritually purified by a monk, 陸竹. He attempts to persuade her to turn a new leaf and leave the life of an assassin. The three months of their relationship ends with him dying by her hands, a final intention to enlighten her. After (Monk)陸竹’s death, 曾靜 is stressed with sorrow and guilty and decides to leave her past behind. She went to a famous surgeon who did plastic surgery on her appearance and she assumes the new identity of an ordinary textile and fabric merchant. Afterwards, she fell in love with another man called 阿生, whose family were killed by 曾靜 before and also did plastic surgery on his own face. During their dating, assassin mafia where 曾靜 used to work for is chasing for her and found out her new identity. The new battles begins and adds ups and downs into 曾靜’s normal life.
In the movie and lyrics, one poem is lauded for several times. The poem goes “
我願化做石橋 Wǒ yuàn huà zuò shíqiáo,
為你受五百年風吹 Wèi nǐ shòu wǔbǎi nián fēngchuī
五百年日曬 wǔbǎi nián rì shài
五百年雨打wǔbǎi nián yǔ dǎ
–> I want to become one stone bridge for you to be weathered by wind, boiling sunshine, and heavy rains for 500 years.
但求此少女 Dàn qiú cǐ shàonǚ
從橋上走過 cóng qiáoshàng zǒuguò
–> In exchange for the beautiful lady who is willing to pass by this stone bridge.”
This movie is the classic interpretation of wuxia, kung fu, and romance, also demonstrating the lifestyles of hundreds of years ago in ancient China.
渡橋 Dùqiáo, transport via the bridge or pass through the bridge, has deeper meaning in the literature. It implies that people go through the guilty and regrets and advance towards new life, leaving the past behind.
In the movie, 曾靜 used to be an assassin, committing countless crimes, and turn into ordinary lives after doing the plastic surgery on her face and long spiritual reflection on herself. Finally, she embraces new community and new relationship with people.
